The Big Bang of EM…

Does anyone know where or when our specialty began? On those slow overnights, I’m always told tales of yore by those with gray / no hair… stories of how it used to be… the wild west… barefoot… uphill… in the snow… both ways.

Check out this podcast from Rob Orman’s: ERCast, which takes you through the history of EM from its early days in the 60’s when the first emergentologists were born out of the primordial soup. The podcast includes an informative interview with Don Stader, president of EMRA, and the always humorous Greg Henry.

THE LEGACY INITIATIVE
In 2011 the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA) set out to create a documentary to chronicle and celebrate the history of emergency medicine. They created “The Legacy Initiative” as a way to archive the history of emergency medicine. The project, which will culminate in a one-hour documentary, will feature interviews with the physicians who founded emergency medicine (Rosen, Goldfrank, Tintinalli, Marx, and the like), interwoven with historical footage of emergency care spanning the last five decades. Legacy will explore the evolution of the specialty – as seen through the eyes of its heroes and visionaries. Check out the trailer below… looks like a must see…

Download the iphone app Downcast and listen to your podcasts in double time- may sound like a chipmunk, but at least you can listen to a complete podcast on the ride in. Can stream or save to your phone. Great way to organize your podcasts (EMCRIT, SMART-EM, ERCAST are a couple of good starters.)… I have no disclaimers… I wish I did.
